In the 1860's during the Victorian Era the invention of the garden hose was 30 years in the future. So how did the average home gardener manage this daunting task. There are several ways to handle watering a garden. One way was to dig a small trench to the garden and flood between each row. Therefore the garden placement to the hand pump or hand dug well was key to an efficient garden. Otherwise one must carry many buckets of water to pour on the plants.
